Just a few days after a major outage in Microsoft Azure, OpenAI’s ChatGPT started facing technical issues, affecting thousands of users. According to the monitoring website Down Detector, reports about ChatGPT problems began around 3 p.m. (ET), and within just half an hour, more than 1,000 issues were reported.
OpenAI confirmed the outage on its official status page at 3:24 p.m., saying, “We’ve identified the issue and are working to fix it.”
The number of outage reports went up to more than 2,600 before they started to decrease. By 3:40 p.m. (ET), Down Detector had recorded over 1,100 reports, while OpenAI was working to restore the service.
Users from several cities in India faced problems
According to DownDetector’s live outage map, most of the reports — around 82% — came from ChatGPT users. About 12% of reports were from the web browser version, and around 6% from the mobile app. The outage graph jumped from zero to over 770 reports in less than an hour. The tracking site also showed that users from several Indian cities, including Chandigarh, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Surat, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, and others, were affected by the issue.
Major outage reported in the United States too
By 1:10 p.m. (Indian time), more than 150 outage reports had been recorded on DownDetector in the U.S. Among these, 81% of users reported issues with ChatGPT, 12% with the app, and 7% with the website. According to DownDetector, the most affected areas included Chicago, Los Angeles, and Atlanta. OpenAI has not yet released an official statement about the cause of the outage or when it will be fixed. Users have been advised to keep an eye on official channels for updates.
Announcement of the GPT-5 Instant model update
OpenAI recently announced an update to its GPT-5 Instant model. The goal of this update is to provide better support to users during sensitive or difficult conversations. In a post on X last week, the company said that parts of a dialogue considered sensitive will now be handled by GPT-5 Instant. This change is designed to give faster and more thoughtful responses to users who may need extra help.
