To challenge Google Chrome, Zoho recently launched the Ulaa browser. Now, OpenAI has introduced a new AI-based web browser called “ChatGPT Atlas.” Let’s take a look at its key features and highlights.

OpenAI has launched a new AI-based web browser named ChatGPT Atlas. This browser has been developed to compete with Google. The company unveiled it during a livestream event, presenting it as the future of the internet. The browser is now available on macOS and will soon be released for Windows, iOS, and Android.

Notably, the AI-based browser race is heating up. In July 2024, OpenAI introduced a search engine prototype called SearchGPT, while Perplexity launched its Comet browser. Additionally, Zoho also launched Ulaa to challenge Google Chrome.

What is Atlas’s Agent Mode?

According to a report by The Verge, ChatGPT Atlas includes a special feature called “Agent Mode.” Currently, it is available only to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users. In Agent Mode, Atlas can perform various tasks for you — such as booking restaurants, reserving flight tickets, or editing documents.

Users can view and manage their memory in the settings. Additionally, there is an Incognito Mode, allowing users to browse without tracking, similar to what is available in Google Chrome.

How Atlas works?

In Atlas, when you click on a search result, the screen splits into two sections — one side displays the webpage, while the other shows the ChatGPT conversation. This is called the Companion Feature, which stays with you at all times. If you prefer, you can also turn off the split-screen view.

The browser also includes a “Cursor Chat” feature that can summarize web pages and enhance selected text in emails.

Will assist with online shopping

OpenAI has previously worked on agentic AI. Tools like Operator and ChatGPT Agent could perform tasks on a computer on behalf of the user. Atlas improves upon these efforts. It helps simplify complex tasks and assist with activities like online shopping. Although earlier tools had some limitations, the company has made improvements with Atlas.

Competition with Perplexity

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says that this browser could change the way the internet is used in the future. As the AI browser battle heats up, it will be exciting to see how Atlas competes with rivals like Google and Perplexity.
